Let’s Talk- Blogging Pet Peeves

Happy Friday you awesome readers!! A couple weeks ago, I wrote a post about my bookish pet peeves. So, this week, I’m talking about my blogging-related pet peeves. Without any further ado, my blogging-ish pet peeves!

*Just a note, I’m not talking about anyone specifically, and these things definitely don’t make me dislike a blog.

#4- Why is WordPress trying to make me pay for things?

Here’s the thing: I make exactly $0 from my blog. But that doesn’t mean I don’t want awesome plugins and such, too. Fun fact about Ry Guy: I’m a folder fiend! When it comes to photos or documents on my laptop, I have folders within folders within folders. It just makes it really easy for me to find what I’m looking for. There’s a WordPress plugin that lets you create folders for your photos or other media here on WordPress, but if you use WordPress.com, you have to pay monthly for an upgraded plan just to use these plugins! I love WordPress when it comes to most things, and I get why they do it (they gotta make bank, too!) I just really don’t wanna have to spend money.

#3- My brain only wants to write when I’m SUPER busy???

Betrayal hurts no matter who it comes from, BUT WHEN IT COMES FROM MY OWN BRAIN?!? LIKE, COME ON BRAIN, WE SHOULD BE ON THE SAME TEAM!!! But alas, that is not the case. Brain likes to wait until I’m gardening with super dirty hands, or when I’m not anywhere near a laptop, or that split second at night when you’re about to slip into blissful, unconscious sleep, but you’re still barely conscious, then Brain likes to scream, “WAAAAAAIT!! I HAVE A GREAT IDEA FOR A BLOG POST!!!” So my options are to get out of bed and write it, wake up enough to text the idea to myself, or just ignore Brain and lose said super awesome idea.

Not cool, Brain. Not. Cool.

#2- Blogs without excerpts/”read more” buttons

This one might make me sound like a terrible little blogger. But when I blog hop, I sometimes skip over some posts. Even with some of my favorite bloggers, if there’s a post that just doesn’t jump out at me, I’ll skip it. I only have so much time to blog hop, so I want to make sure I’m reading content I love that I’ll really be able to leave a meaningful comment or really adamant like. That being said, if I visit someone’s blog, and I have to scroll through 3 full posts before I find one that really jumps out at me, it just makes me sigh over-dramatically.

Me, being waaay too extra

If your theme allows it, use the excerpt feature, and if it doesn’t, use that “Read More” tag. That way, I get a taste of what the post is about, but I can still move on easily if I’m looking for something else.

#1- When there’s no link to a book

There have been so many times when I’ve been reading a post, and its author raves about a book, but then doesn’t leave a link to said awesome book! I am sometimes that author. How am I supposed to add it to my GoodReads TBR/ Amazon wishlist without a link?! I realise it only takes about 30 seconds to switch from WordPress to Goodreads, but that’s 30 seconds I could spend reading/blogging! I say that, but the truth is I’m just supremely lazy, and want other people to do the work for me, even though sometimes I don’t want to do it for them.

  1. Eugh yes to all of this!! I also hate when you have to scroll through full posts just to find something from a few posts ago. I hate that wordpress tries to make you pay for everything as well, and that if you don’t want it on a plan then you have to pay something extortionate! Great post!

  2. Wait, there’s a plugin for WordPress where I can make folders for my pictures??? THAT WOULD MAKE THINGS SO MUCH EASIER WHAT. I’m really hoping I can update my plan at the end of the year if I can get some money from my parents. 😂 I really wanted to change the font color of my theme because it doesn’t match with my design, and then found out only Premium plan users can do that. 🙃

Ugh, I always want to do ALL THE BLOGGING THINGS when I’m busy. It’s ridiculous. 😩 And I also hate scrolling through too many full posts on a home page. It’s so slow to load on my browser. 🙈

  4. #3 literally happens to me all the time! I’ll literally be on the verge of sleep and I’ll get a blog post idea and ignore it, then when I wake up I remember I had an idea, but not what the idea was!

  5. Omg blogs that don’t have excerpts drive me insane. Seriously, bat sh*# crazy!! If I want to see the posts you have I don’t want to scroll for a minute just to make it to the next post. Ugh 😂
I never post Goodreads links to my reviews….. oops! I guess I never thought to do that but it would be handy! Maybe I’ll look into doing that!

    • Exactly! And if I’m checking out your blog for the first time, I want to be able to scroll a few times and get a sense of what you post. I don’t want to have to scroll for 30 mins just to see what your blog is about.

And the book links are such a little thing. Like, they would only save me 30 seconds, tops? But apparently my brain thinks that’s a big deal!

  6. I hate that I do it but I also do #2. I JUST FORGET! My previous theme cut off my post on the main page automatically at like 100 words or something so it was wonderful to scroll and now it doesn’t so I’m constantly forgetting to do it.
I never added goodreads or amazon links either but I definitely should do that in the future!

    • ME TOO! My old theme shortened them, too! Sometimes I still publish a post, go about my merry day, and when I check back in, I realize I AM DOING THE PET PEEVE! 😱

And I’m just really over dramatic when it comes to the links. It’s such a little thing, but for some reason my brain makes a big deal out of the 30 seconds it took me to switch to Goodreads.

  7. I used to be that person who didn’t do excerpts. Then I realized I wrote incredibly long posts and I was being ridiculous.

I’ve never linked to books before but you make a good point. I wrote a list for next week that I actually linked all the books on and I feel so proud of myself now after reading this.

    • The book links thing is so minor, but it’s so helpful! I never used to link books until I visited a blog that didn’t either, and went “Hm. That’s a little irritating.” And now I feel guilty if I don’t.

And I used to do the same thing with the long posts. My old theme automatically shortened posts, so when I switched to this new one, I didn’t even realize I was being that person for a while 😂

      • I’m certainly going to do it from now on! It makes so much sense!

My old theme didn’t automatically shorten posts so I just had these long posts everywhere because I hated the read more button. Now the one I’ve got automatically shortens things so I don’t have to think about it!

  8. Posts that forego the “read more” feature drive me bananas! Sometimes a review or tag can be really long, which is fine except that it means I have to scroll for 20 years before I get to their next post and as I like to browse quickly I’m not a fan of this haha
